Welcome to Microshaft.
This "Read Me" file contains the latest information about running
Microshaft to insure the best playing experience possible. Please
refer to the printed "User Guide" for Microshaft instructions.
Also, please refer to the printed "Online Guide" for details on
configuring Microshaft to launch your browser and going online to
the Microshaft web site.
Note: the leave-behind "Exploder" game does not require the Microshaft
CD-ROM to be in your CD-ROM drive in order to play.
System Requirements
====================
To run Microshaft , your Macintosh must have at least:
- A 33 MHz 68040 processor (PowerPC processor recommended)
- 16 MB RAM
- 20 MB free hard disk space
- A double speed CD-ROM (quad speed recommended)
- System 7.1 (7.5 or later recommended)
To connect to the Microshaft web site, you must also have:
- At least 12 MB additional RAM recommended
- A 14.4 Kbps modem (28.8 Kbps recommended)
- Netscape Navigator version 3.0 or later, or
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later
- A subscription to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), or
America Online 3.0 or later
- MacTCP 2.0.6 or later, or Open Transport 1.1 or later
Troubleshooting
===============
If the Microshaft Launcher fails to launch Microshaft:
1. Before running Microshaft, close all open windows (except the
Microshaft folder) and quit all running programs, including those
that run automatically when you start up your Mac (especially screen
savers and toolbars).
2. Turn off nonessential extensions and control panels using the
Extensions Manager control panel (restart your Mac afterwards).
The extensions needed to run Microshaft are:
- Apple CD-ROM
- Sound Manager (System 7.1.x only)
In addition, to go online, you need:
- MacTCP, Open Transport and PPP extensions
- Dialer (PPP) control panel
Also, deactivate AppleTalk in the chooser, and remove any fonts
not shipped with your system from the Fonts folder .
Video, Animation and Sound:
If you are experiencing problems with video, animation or sound:
1. Set your monitor graphics mode to display 640x480 resolution
with 256 colors. To do so, launch the Monitors control panel.
2. Turn off virtual memory. To do so, launch the Memory control
panel. You must restart your Mac for this to take effect.
NOTE: On some Macintoshes with only16MB of RAM, Virtual Memory may
be required to run Microshaft.
3. Before running Microshaft, close all open windows and quit all
running programs, including those that run automatically when you
start up your Mac.
4. Computers with slower components (33 MHz 68040's, 60 or 66 MHz
Power PC's, 2X CD-ROM drives) may exhibit poor audio/video performance,
long delays (loads) between screens and sluggish game play.
5. If you have a 68040-based Macintosh (e.g. Quadra or an early
Performa model), make sure that you set the Cache Switch control
panel to "Faster."
Going Online:
If you have trouble visiting the Microshaft web site from within the
Microshaft program:
1. Run Browser Setup to configure Microshaft to launch your browser.
Browser Setup cannot find an open browser -- make sure that you quit
your browser before running Browser Setup.
2. Make sure that your browser and dialer are configured to connect
to your ISP, then try launching your browser to a well-known web
page BEFORE running Microshaft and going online. If you don't see
the web page (make sure the browser is not reading from a file "cached"
on your hard drive), call your ISP for support. If you do see the web page,
try launching your browser to http://www.parroty.com next. If you can't
enter the Parroty site, our web server may be busy or unavailable, so
please try again later.
3. To return to Microshaft after going online, make sure you quit your
browser. Closing the last (or only) open browser window won't quit
your browser.
4. Open Transport improperly unloads from memory, resulting in a
system error, requiring you to restart your Mac. Make sure
that Open Transport doesn't unload when you disconnect from your ISP:
- Open the TCP/IP Control Panel.
- Select Edit, then select User Mode.
- Click the Advanced button and click OK.
- Click Options (lower right of screen).
- Click to uncheck "load only when needed" and click OK.
- Close the TCP/IP Control Panel and click Save.
5. Apple's PPP dialer installed with Open Transport doesn't run
reliably with System 7.6. Please upgrade your system to version
7.6.1 or later.
6. If Microshaft fails to launch your browser, see troubleshooting
items (1) through (3) above under "If the Microshaft Launcher fails to
launch Microshaft."
Other:
- If you have a PowerPC-based MacIntosh, make sure that you turn on
the Modern Memory Manager in the Memory control panel.
